Our Proper Dog Food Recipe

Completely Natural

You may see the word “natural” thrown around quite a lot in the world of dog food! Our definition of natural however is quite different.

Our definition of natural dog food:A dog food in which all nutrients present, are derived from natural food sources only, without the addition of synthetic vitamin-mineral powders.”

Our food is also FREE FROM:  ADDITIVES, PRESERVATIVES, FORMED MEAT, MECHANICALLY SEPARATED MEAT, BONE MEAL, ATTRACTANTS, PROTEIN SUBSTITUTES SUCH AS SOYA, ARTIFICIAL COLOURINGS, ARTIFICIAL AROMAS

How did we create a complete, natural dog food without the use of synthetic vitamin-mineral powders you ask?

We use an abundance of high-quality human grade meat and other nutritionally dense, natural ingredients.
Each ingredient, including the cuts of meat we use and the proportions of these, have been carefully chosen for a reason – to provide your dog with all the nutrients they need to thrive!
Our food has also been extensively lab tested for a full nutrient profile, to ensure all amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals are present in our food, at the right levels once cooked.

Meticulous Preparation

The preparation of your dog’s meal is all carried out by hand, in our home kitchen and involves a lot of chopping, soaking, straining, measuring, and mixing. We then sous vide cook our food low and slow up to 90°C to ensure nutrients do not degrade during cooking – this also makes the food extra tasty!  – In fact it will take over 8 hours to turn out the perfect dog food meal, with of course, an accompanying delicious supplement broth.
And all this so your dog can stay super healthy, while enjoying the very best taste! Licked clean bowls are guaranteed!

Now for Our Ingredients:

Meat

Optimising your dog’s nutrition is our priority, and we believe that the finest source of protein and micronutrients comes from meat.
Meat offers the most bioavailable forms of essential nutrients, making it easier for your dog to digest, absorb, and utilize them effectively.
That’s why our food is predominantly crafted from human-grade (category 3), grass-fed British meat. Each recipe includes a blend of muscle meats and offal, lean and fatty, to ensure a comprehensive spectrum of nutrients.
Our food isn’t mush either… Some of the meat we use is minced (the beef heart), but the rest is cut into bite-sized chunks. Your dog will love having something to sink their teeth into – plus eating these larger chunks should increase chewing and reduce gulping the food down.

Muscle Meat

Our commitment to providing top-tier protein is reflected in the incorporation of a muscle meat in every recipe.
Muscle meats provide a high-quality protein source, rich in essential amino acids, as well as zinc, phosphorus, omega-6, folic acid, and other various B-vitamins. Our current recipes feature Beef shin, and Lamb leg.

Beef Offal

We love Beef offal due to its exceptional nutrient density.
Our recipes feature Beef heart, Beef spleen, and Beef liver, offering a wealth of nutrients such as Iron, Zinc, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, Selenium, Potassium, vitamin A, vitamins B12, B9, and B2.
Beef heart in particular is rich in coenzyme Q10 – a compound that, while not an essential dietary nutrient for dogs, plays a crucial role in cellular energy production and acts as an antioxidant.

Our Superfoods

Sorghum - Proper Dog Food - Natural Ingredients

Sorghum

Sorghum is a gluten-free ancient grain.

Yes, our food contains a grain! But before you freak out – hear us out.

We have done A LOT of research into dog nutrition and have found nothing that suggests grains are bad for dogs. We urge you to read our research review, (you can just skip to the carbohydrates section), which explains the incredible benefits of feeding grains.

Research has shown us that at a fine particle size, sorghum has greater nutrient digestibility than rice, maize, potatoes, and peas. Additionally, dogs fed the sorghum-based diet had higher concentrations of total short chain fatty acids (SCFA) which maintain gut health. Sorghum also promotes good glycaemic control and increased satiety.

Specially prepared: We use finely milled sorghum to increase digestibility of nutrients. We soak our sorghum in a solution of water and apple cider vinegar which removes any chemically detectable tannins and breaks down phytic acid.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are a powerhouse of nutrients, rich in Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium Manganese, Zinc, Selenium and vitamin B3.

Additionally, they serve as an excellent source of insoluble fibre, complementing the soluble fibre from our psyllium husk. Insoluble fibre is beneficial for digestion regulation, stool firmness, and enhanced satiety.

We freshly grind our hemp seeds to ensure maximum digestibility.

Blueberry powder - Proper Dog Food - Natural Ingredients

Organic Blueberry powder

I don’t know about you, but our dog loves to graze on a berry or two whilst walking through the forest.

Blueberries are a good source of vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, thus helps to prevent oxidative stress causing damage to cells.

We chose freeze-dried powdered blueberries because our taste tester, Maia, decided there were too many fresh blueberries to meet our vitamin E requirements – Powdered blueberries contained a higher concentration of the much-needed vitamin E!

Sunflower Seeds - Proper Dog Food - Natural Ingredients

Organic Sunflower seeds

In our endeavour to be free of synthetic vitamins, we included ground sunflower seeds to our recipe to boost our vitamin E content, as they are an excellent source of this essential vitamin.

Sunflower seeds are also a great source of omega 6 fatty acids. Research has shown that a diet containing sunflower seeds in combination with linseed, increases serum polyunsaturated fatty acid levels and improves skin and coat quality.

Kelp

Kelp is an edible seaweed rich in iodine, an essential mineral for dogs. We incorporate a small amount into your dog’s food, ensuring they receive the necessary iodine for optimal thyroid function.

Psyllium Husk

Psyllium husk is an excellent prebiotic source of soluble fibre.

Soluble fibre is highly fermentable fibre. This means it is readily fermented in the colon by bacteria in the gut, which in turn produces short chain fatty acids (SCFAs).

SCFAs are the beneficial by-products of fibre fermentation, providing energy for cells.

Additionally, soluble fibre is thought to increase satiety, as SCFAs signal satiety hormones. It also slows digestive transit time and regulates blood glucose and cholesterol.

Ginger

Ginger, a natural and flavourful addition to our recipe, provides numerous health benefits for dogs. Known for its digestive aid properties, ginger helps alleviate nausea, gas, and indigestion. It promotes healthy digestion by reducing inflammation in the digestive tract and soothing the stomach. It is also rich in manganese and other minerals.

Celtic Sea Salt

Sodium and Chloride are essential nutrients for dogs. These minerals are important for maintaining proper fluid balance, supporting nerve and muscle function, and overall health.

Salt, also known as sodium chloride, is a great way to ensure your dog is getting these vital minerals in their food. We use Himalayan sea salt as it also contains a wide array of minerals, including magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

Note: we only add a teeny tiny pinch to your dog’s food, ensuring a balanced and safe intake of these essential minerals.

Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil is a rich source of Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids. Scientifically proven to support joint health, enhance coat quality, and boost overall immunity.

Our cod liver oil is extracted via the cold pressed method to ensure all nutrients are retained. To avoid vital nutrients degrading during cooking, we add the perfect amount of cod liver oil to your dog’s gravy once it has cooled.

*We do not use fortified cod liver oil. All the nutrients in our cod liver oil occur naturally.

Wheat Germ Oil

Derived from the wheat kernel, our wheat germ oil undergoes a cold-pressed extraction method to maintain its natural properties.

This oil is exceptionally rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant and essential nutrient for dogs. It supports immune function and promotes a healthy skin and coat.

We add the perfect amount of this to your dog’s gravy once it has cooled, to retain all the nutrients.

Eggs to support healthy skin, coat & joints

Egg Shell Powder - Proper Dog Food - Natural Ingredients

Eggshell Powder

Eggshells are almost completely made up of calcium carbonate. Calcium mediates many biological processes in the body including nerve and muscle function, membrane permeability and cell division. Most notably, calcium is needed for the growth and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.

We add the perfect amount of powdered eggshell to your dog’s meal to ensure they get the right amount of this important mineral.

Egg Yolk Powder - Proper Dog Food - Natural Ingredients

Egg Yolk Powder

Humans get most of their vitamin D from the sun, but this is harder for dogs to do. It is therefore crucial that dogs get this essential from their diet, and egg yolk is one of the few natural sources of vitamin D.

Egg yolks are also rich in vitamin A, fatty acids, calcium, and phosphorus, which are vital for the maintenance of healthy skin, coat, bones & teeth.

Your Dog's Gravy

When you order our food, each meal comes with 50g of your dog’s special gravy. It is made with our Proper Bone Broth and is enriched with probiotics, wheat germ oil and cod liver oil.

The gravy is specially tailored for your dog and must be served with every meal to make it nutritionally complete. It contains important nutrients such as vitamin E, Vitamin D and omega 3.

The broth itself is rich in gelatine, glycine, collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin. It soothes gut inflammation, aids digestion, and promotes healthy skin, coat, and joints. Our probiotics have been proven to improve stool quality, reduce gas, enhance immunity, and increase nutrient absorption

When you feed Proper Dog Food, there is no need to spend extra money on other supplements for your dog. Our nutritionally complete meals provide joint support, skin and coat care, and digestive health benefits.

Proper Bone Broth

Our home-made bone broth is made using the best grass-fed beef knuckle bones, chicken feet, water, and a hint of apple cider vinegar to help draw out nutrients from the bones.

As well being a source of protein and trace minerals, our Proper Bone Broth is rich in gelatine, glycine, collagen glucosamine, and chondroitin. It soothes gut inflammation, aids digestion, and promotes healthy skin, coat, and joints.

You may notice our broth is jelly-like at fridge temperature – this is a sign of a well-made broth, rich in collagen and gelatine which is particularly important for the growth and maintenance of connective tissues. If a bone broth is runny when cold this is a sign that nutrients have not been successfully extracted from the bones during cooking – or the bones are bad quality.

Each of our meals comes with a gravy made with our Proper Bone broth enriched with probiotics and other ingredients to make the meal complete.

You can also purchase our Bone Broth with probiotics on its own here. Sold in convenient weekly supplies, our broth is a great at enticing fussy eaters and adding a boost of goodness to your dog’s food.

We have elevated our bone broth with our unique blend of probiotics

Proper Dog Food Probiotics

A healthy gut contains trillions of bacteria with high biodiversity, along with other fungi and viruses, which are collectively known as microbiota. A healthy gut has positive functions in several biological processes, including fermentation of foods in the colon, regulation of immune function and mediating the gut-brain axis.

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that maintain or improve gut microbiota (if they can colonise in the gut!). Our review of research in this area indicates that a minimum of 1 billion colony forming units (CFU) per dose of probiotics is necessary for enough bacteria to survive and colonise in a dog’s gut. Which is why we add at least 10 billion CFU per dose to our bone broth.

From our research, we have created a unique blend of probiotics, each strain specifically chosen for its unique properties.

Our probiotic blend:

Bacillus subtilis – Shown to improve stool odour and reduces gas formation in the intestine of dogs.

Bacillus coagulans – Found to improve the digestibility of nutrients, improves immune function.

Bifidobacterium animalis – supplementation shown to lower the need for antibiotic medication to resolve diarrhoea and improves stool quality.

Lactobacillus acidophilus - Improved stool consistency, reduction in pathogenic bacteria.
